該報首創「時評」專欄，以短小精悍的評論針砭時弊；大量刊載小說與文藝作品，是近代文學重要發表平台。後期更注重體育新聞與圖片報導，版面活潑新穎。與《申報》、《新聞報》並稱上海三大報，在中國新聞史、文學史及社會文化史上佔有重要地位。
