Adlai E. Stevenson (1900-1965), presidential candidate in 1952 and 1956, was the leading Democrat and a major figure in American politics and diplomacy during the Cold War years. This module comprises two subsections, the United Nations material and the Subject Files. The United Nations materials document Stevenson's involvement in the organization of the UN after World War II and his service as U.S. ambassador to the UN from 1961 to 1965. The Subject Files illuminate his career prior to his election as governor of Illinois and also show his commitment to Chicago's benevolent institutions. The papers do not include materials from his governorship of Illinois which may be found at the Illinois State Historical Society in Springfield, Illinois.
