Originally envisioned by the late United Nations Secretary Ralph J. Bunche, the body of interviews contained here was first known as the Civil Rights Documentation Project and has been critical to African American scholarship about this period since the first interviews became public in the late 1970’s. Included here are transcriptions of close to 600 interviews with those who made history in the struggles for voting rights, against discrimination in housing, for the desegregation of the schools, to expose racism in hiring, in defiance of police brutality, and to address poverty in the African American communities.
