The span of years between 1945-1959 began with a coup d’état in 1945 by a combination of a military rebellion and a popular movement led by Democratic Action. In 1947 Rómulo Ángel del Monte Carmelo Gallegos Freire was elected President. 1948 saw another coup d’état and General Marcos Evangelista Pérez Jiménez took over the country as dictator, ruling from 1950 to 1958. Rising oil prices enabled Venezuela’s economy to develop rapidly. Pérez himself was overthrown by a military coup on 1958. The documents found in these files are predominantly instructions to – and despatches from – U.S. diplomatic and consular officials, often accompanied by enclosures, addressing the political affairs and concerns affecting Venezuela.
