The War Department’s Operations Division (OPD), created in March 1942, was the general headquarters within the General Staff with which General Marshall exercised his overall Army command, and provided the strategic and logistical planning for all theaters of operation. In March 1942, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who at that time headed the OPD, instructed Col. Thomas North, Chief of the Current Section of the OPD, to prepare brief daily summaries of OPD actions, including major decisions by the Joint and Combined Chiefs of Staff. The first summary appeared on 29 March 1942; they continued until after the end of the war. This official division diary comprises summaries of information received from commanding generals and sent by the OPD daily between 29 March 1942 and 31 May 1946.
