These essays, commissioned by the US and British Navies, were written by former German officers and officials on the aspects of WWII with which they were most familiar. This collection is a combination of essays written after the war as well as relevant essays written during the war and added later, including transcripts of speeches, personal accounts of wartime experiences, and research and development reports. The majority of these essays concern naval aspects of the war, including operational, tactical, and developmental aspects of German strategy and equipment. A great deal of attention is devoted to submarine warfare, and there are also essays providing their knowledge of the Soviet Navy as an adversary.
