This collection makes available the Main Papers of the House of Lords - the most important working record of Parliament for this period since many of the House of Commons papers were destroyed in the fire of 1834. Some highlights of the collection include the Protestation Return of 1641-1642, coverage of the dramatic events leading up to the execution of the King in 1649, and the aftermath of the English Civil War through to the end of the Cavalier Parliament in 1678. It also includes petitions which highlight the great social and economic distress of the country during these years as well as a host of other matters on which citizens sought relief from Parliament
