This new collection makes available for the first time some of the rarest India-related items published in England and the subcontinent as collected and acquired by Charles Lesley Ames (1884-1964). A few scattered items were printed prior to the 1760s, approximately four hundred were published in the period from 1770 to 1800, the preponderance appeared in the nineteenth century, and a few imprints are dated after 1900. Approximately half of the items come from English presses; the rest are from India. The languages of the titles are almost always English, but a few works in German and French (usually travel accounts or Orientalist literature) and a handful of Indian-language imprints are included.
