State Papers Online provides access to the British State Papers, the papers of the Secretary of State from Henry VIII's accession in 1509 to 1782. Eighteenth Century, 1714-1782, Part IV: State Papers Foreign, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Turkey cover the great northern rivalry of Russia and Sweden, as well as Britain's relations with Prussia, a heavy-weight in European politics, particularly under Frederick the Great. Russian victory in the Great Northern War in 1721 ended the supremacy of the Swedish Empire in the region and confirmed the Tsardom of Russia as a crucial new power.
