This collection consists of inter and intradepartmental memoranda, reports, position papers, summaries, maps, photographs, and despatches relating to the internal political affairs of China and US foreign policy toward China. Materials in this collection focus mainly on military and political aspects of the Chinese civil war and US intervention in that conflict. Records include background material on US efforts to negotiate a settlement between the Chinese Nationalists and Communists, Sino-Soviet relations, US military operations in China, the activities of Chinese officials, US financial assistance to the Nationalists, and the question of recognition of Chinese Communist regime.
