The time period covered by this collection bore witness to dramatic changes in Costa Rican government and society, including the presidency of Teodoro Picado Michalski, protests over election results and the resultant civil war, the emergence of José Figueres Ferrer as revolutionary and political leader, the enactment of a new constitution which abolished the military, and a border war with Nicaragua in 1954-1955. The documents found in these files are predominantly instructions to – and despatches from – U.S. diplomatic and consular officials, often accompanied by enclosures, addressing the political affairs and concerns affecting Nicaragua.
