The mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System is to administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management and, where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans. This collection represents the history of the U.S. Conservation Movement from its humble beginnings to the organization of a national network of Federal wildlife refuges. The documents consist of correspondence, research reports, periodic reports, reference materials, memorandums, and other records concerning the establishment and maintenance of Federal wildlife refuges, including information on state and foreign refuges.
