Distinguished Lectures in Humanities: Humanities Research in a Datafied World

This talk, presented by Professor Kay O’Halloran, examines the impact of datafication and AI on humanities research, particularly in linguistics and language studies. LLMs now process text, images, video, and sound, enabling algorithmic modelling of society and culture. Also, the talk explores how humanities scholars can harness these technologies while addressing risks, drawing on examples from the University of Liverpool’s Digital Media and Society Institute, including new methods for analysing misinformation, disinformation, memes, and public responses to major events.

AI in science: Accelerating discovery?

This seminar examines AI's role in accelerating scientific discovery, highlighting its transformative power, such as improved hurricane predictions and the AlphaFold model for protein structure prediction facilitating advances in drug safety. It also covers challenges like equitable access in low-income countries, reduced creativity, model opacity, bias, and the undervaluation of routine scientific tasks that may harbour discovery potential. The seminar advocates for transparent, collaborative, responsible human-AI partnerships and data-driven approaches to maximise research impact while ensuring responsible use, and fostering inclusive metascience.
