Preamble

One of the primary expected outcomes of the Library Week was to collect user feedback for future library planning and improvement.  In order to create a fun-filled and relaxing environment for users and friends of the Library, a poster tree was set up during the Library Week where users could write their comments on a leaf and then pasted onto the poster tree.  Users could also share and discuss their views with librarians at the four Live Chat sessions with librarians.

User Comments/suggestions and Library Responses

During the four-day period, a total of 48 specific comments had been collected, break down as follows:

  • Computing equipment & IT services
Overall, users were least satisfied with the provision of computing equipment and IT services in the Library.  Insufficient PCs and printers, and slow internet speed were the major concern.  Users also wanted the Library to install the full suite of Microsoft Office in all Library PCs.

Library’s response:  We would like to remind users that Library PCs are primarily for searching of library resources only.  Students are encouraged to use the PCs at ITS Computer Centre for their assignment.  We will monitor the usage of library PCs and printers, and internet speed closely to ensure that users could conduct their searching in a fast and efficient manner.

  • Library resources

In general, the majority of users were of the view that the Library’s collection is comprehensive.  However, a few would want the Library to increase the number of multiple copy of textbooks in the Special Collections while some cited that access to e-resources were unstable at times.

Library’s response:  Library’s current practice is to purchase 5 copies of an item if it is for course work recommended by faculty staff and there is heavy demand and continuous use of the item.  The Library collects widely and comprehensively to support teaching and research at PolyU.  In order to make the best use of the Library book budget, it is necessary to balance the number of duplicate copies with the acquisition of a wide range of high quality titles in the Library.

  • Library opening hours

There had been suggestions that the Library should extend its opening hours on weekday evenings to 12 mid-night.

Library response:  Currently the Library opens 101.5 hours and 115.5 hours per week during term time and examination period respectively.  The PolyU Library ranks second among all UGC libraries in opening hours.  We will continue to monitor the opening hours in light of demand and implement appropriate measures when warranted.
