2007 Library Student Survey

In March 2007, the Library conducted a student survey to collect views and feedback of students on our services and resources. A total of 1,210 valid responses were received. Same as last year, students were asked to indicate how important various aspects of library services were, and how well we performed. On a 5-point scale, 99% of the respondents are either very satisfied with or find the services provided by the Library acceptable, giving a rating of 3 or above. The overall satisfaction rating is 3.96 which is slightly lower than that of last year (3.98). We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the 1,210 students who spent their time to complete the survey questionnaire and provided us with their valuable feedback.

Congratulations to the Lucky Draw Winners

As a token of thanks, 1 GB flash drives were given out as prizes to survey respondents in a lucky draw.

The lucky draw winners received the prizes from Mr Steve O'Connor, the University Librarian.

Following are a summary of the survey results and our responses to students' comments.

10 Most Common Comments and Library Responses

1. Too few scanners in the Library! We have to queue for a long time.  The scanners are old and outdated too!

To minimize waiting time and to improve scanning quality, we will upgrade the scanner in the Photocopying Unit (G/F), and add one new scanner each to Media Services (3/F) and Serials (5/F).

2. Photocopiers and printers are inadequate and of poor quality.  Can you do something to improve?

We found that students prefer to queue for the photocopiers at the Photocopying Room on G/F rather than using machines on other floors.  To help to distribute photocopying traffic evenly in the Library, posters will be put up in all Photocopying Rooms showing the locations of photocopiers on other floors.  The Photocopying Unit will also monitor closely the proper functioning of all Library copiers.

3. There are not enough textbooks in the Library!

According to the Library's Acquisition Guidelines, a maximum of 7 copies of textbooks will be purchased.  Special requests from academic staff will be considered by the Library if funds are available.  Students should note that the Library cannot possibly purchase textbooks for every student.  Students should purchase their own copies of textbooks for classroom use.  To optimize access, the Library will purchase e-books if available.

4. Buy more Chinese books please!

The Library acquires, on average, over 7,000 Chinese books each year.  Intake of Chinese books is approximately 19% of the total books purchased annually.  In addition to this, over 86,000 Chinese e-books are available via the Library's Apabi e-book (方正數字圖書).  Subject to availability of funding and in accordance with our collection development policy, the Library will continue to acquire Chinese books for our users.

5. The 24-hour Study Centre is too noisy for studying after Library closes!

To tackle the noise problem, Security Guards will step up after-hour patrolling of the 24-hour Study Centre.  The Library will also review the Centre’s usage data to facilitate the long-term planning of study space.

6. The wireless network connection is unstable, signal is weak in some areas!

The Library will co-ordinate with ITS for the enhancement of wireless network connection and bandwidth improvement.

7. There are not enough power sockets in the seating areas for us to use our notebook PCs.  We have to use the wall sockets.  This is hazardous because of the wires lying on the floor.

Thank you for letting us know.  We will review the adequacy of power outlets in all reading rooms and add more power sockets if necessary.

8. I hope the Library will provide more PCs with Microsoft Office for us to edit documents.

There are a number of PCs with Microsoft application at the Media Services.  Students should note that Library PCs are primarily for searching of library resources only.  If you wish to work on assignments, please use the PCs at ITS computer centres or bring your own notebook PCs.

9. I like the new AVM online request service (currently on trial). Could you make this a permanent service?

Yes.  The Library is pleased to note that an overwhelming 92% of the survey respondents voted that the AVM online request service should be made available on a permanent basis.  This new service will be incorporated in the 2007/08 Library loan policy.

10. Library staff are friendly and helpful.

Thank you for your compliment.  We will keep up with the good work!

YBP Profiling Workshop

A good number of academic staff joined the profiling workshop held by the Library on 27th April. The workshop introduced our newly selected book vendor, YBP Library Services. YBP was founded in 1971 as a bookseller to libraries and is affiliated to Baker & Taylor, a worldwide distributor of books, music, DVDs and video games. The workshop focused on "Books On Approval Plan” and demonstrated the various ways of selecting titles and pushing this information out to academics electronically by using GOBI Alert new title services.

The workshop was very well received by academic staff who found the GOBI useful for their reserach work.  Most staff indicated that they would like to join similar workshops in future.
