New Students' Corner : PIN & VPN

2 other things you’ll need to do as soon as you can:

1. SET UP YOUR LIBRARY PIN (Personal Identification Number) for using library online services such as renewal, book request, view your own loan record and history, and place new materials recommendations, etc. Guides on setting PIN is available at http://www.lib.polyu.edu.hk/pin.

(You don't need to register for a library card to borrow books. Your student/staff card is your library card).

2. INSTALL THE VPN CLIENT in your home PC to access the Library's e-resources at home. For details, please refer to http://www.polyu.edu.hk/its/services_facilities/dialup_06.html.

You can get instant web feed by subscribing to RSS (Really Simple Syndication) on the new HomePage
You can use Online Spell Check in your OPAC search

Wi-Fi Access in Library

Free Wi-Fi Internet connectivity is now available to University staff and students at numerous PCCW and Y5ZONE hotspots around town. Reciprocally, non-PolyU Library users who are current PCCW or Y5ZONE subscribers may now connect to the Internet right from the Library network. Non-subscribers may purchase a day pass online for temporary use. Details of access are available on the wireless LAN login page when connecting your notebook in the Library.

Wider Reciprocal Access to Other UGC-funded Libraries

Good News! Wider Reciprocal Access to Other UGC-funded Libraries

Effective 1 August 2007 and for a trial period of 2 years ending 31 July 2009, wider access privilege to other UGC-funded libraries are extended to the following groups of users:

PolyU students	Library Privilege at UGC libraries
UGC-funded postgraduate non-degree students	Borrowing rights
UGC-funded undergraduate degree students	Reader access only

New Services for Audio-visual Materials

AV Online Renewal

Starting 1 September 2007, you can renew all AV materials (except movies and drama series and wireless LAN cards) on the online Library Catalogue for one time on condition that there is no one requesting for the same item.

Advance Bookings by Academic Staff

Besides placing online requests for AV materials, faculties who need to use Library AVM for teaching preparation or classroom use on a specific date can also book them in advance. Bookings can be made in person at the Media Services Counter, by phone at 2766-6870 / 2766-6871 or via email at lbms@inet.polyu.edu.hk. Requesters are required to pick up and return the booked materials promptly so that others can use them.

AV Reserve

Faculties are welcome to recommend the Library to place specific Library AV items on AV Reserve if the AV items are expected to be used by a large number of students for course work. All items on AV Reserve will be loaned for use only within the Library for a maximum of 3 hours and are not available for online request nor renewal.

“Movie of Hundred Years, Collection of Hundred Years”, produced by the National Cultural Bureau in association with China Central Television and various audiovisual publication companies, aims to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Chinese motion pictures. The 100 selections, mainly Chinese classical films and encompassing different styles and subjects, allow the audience to recall the past 100 years’ history of China. Presented in DVDs, movie posters, original or re-made movie sound tracks and others, the series reflects the development and evolution of Chinese motion pictures over the past 100 years. It is commended as the great encyclopedia of Chinese motion pictures.

Antarctic Photo Exhibition

The University Library will be displaying a small exhibition of images from the Antarctic, 10 September to 16 October inclusive. The Antarctic is a stunningly beautiful and pure place. Antarctica is the most southern continent sitting at the bottom of the earth. It is below South America , New Zealand and Australia. It is most difficult to get to. It is extremely remote.

It is 1.4 times the size of the United States and 58 times bigger than the United Kingdom. It has less than 1000 people and then only in the summers but is teeming with wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

These images of the various aspects of the Antarctic concentrate mainly on the area around South Georgia, the Falklands and the Antarctic Peninsula itself. The images evidence wildlife, the ice , the whaling history and life in the nearby islands of the Falklands.

Come and enjoy these images of extreme cold, contrasting so much with the heat and humidity of Hong Kong.

PolyU Education Info Weekend
