LS003 – Surfing the Internet for Useful Information (1 hour 30 mins)
This workshop will introduce participants to the latest tools in order to locate and evaluate information on the Internet. Instruction and hands-on practice on how to use search engines, web directories, meta indexes and specialized databases will be provided. Advanced techniques in searching popular engines, e.g., Google &Yahoo, will also be discussed.
Workshop level: Elementary. Participants are expected to have basic knowledge of using an internet browser, e.g., Internet Explorer or Firefox

LS006 - Accessing Dissertations Around the World (1 hour 30 mins)
Learn how to search for and access dissertations in and beyond the Library. Specialized databases such as PolyU Electronic Theses, Digital Dissertation Consortium, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, China Doctor Dissertations Full-text Database (中國博士學位論文全文數據庫) , and other online resources will be covered.

LS011 - ISI Web of Science Citation Databases (1 hour 30 mins)
Web of Science enables users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from over 11,000 research journals worldwide, as well as international proceedings coverage for over 120,000 conferences. In this workshop, you will learn how to find articles by topic or author, how to find out the number of times a particular article is cited, how to use the “Cited Reference Search” function for citing references of a particular article, and many more.

LS032 - Basics of Using RefWorks to Handle References and Bibliographies (1 hour 30 mins)
Learn how to create a database of references and generate a bibliography from a list of references automatically in APA, MLA or other styles. The potential use of RefWorks in research will be discussed.

Journal Citation Reports offers access to citation statistics for more than 7,500 journals in approximately 200 disciplines. This workshop will prepare participants to find the total cites, impact factor, immediacy index, cited half-life of journals, and many more.

This workshop will compare the results found from various citation analysis tools such as Science Citation Index, Journal Citation Report and Scopus, and explore effective strategies to utilize such tools.

LS039 - Citing References & Avoiding Plagiarism (1 hour 15 mins)
This workshop will focus on the concepts of citation, citation styles and on how to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is a sensitive issue and students may sometimes commit plagiarism unintentionally due to careless referencing. In this workshop, participants are expected to gain generic skills in handling citations. Different citation styles will be discussed and library resources on citing references will be presented. Bibliographic management tools will also be introduced.

LS041 - Searching Specialized Financial Databases : Datastream (1 hour 30 mins)
Datastream is a database that provides financial data such as equities prices, stock market indices, economic statistics, foreign exchange rates, interest rates, etc. Instructor will show participants how to retrieve data and to create reports and charts. Students of accounting and business studies may find this workshop useful. Please note that there will be demonstrations on using Datastream in this workshop but hands-on practices are not available due to software restriction.

This workshop will demonstrate how to locate key business information such as country economic reports, industry and market outlook, analyst reports, company profiles as well as journal articles. Databases covered in the workshop include Business Source Complete, Global Market Information Database, ISI Emerging Markets, and Reuters Knowledge for Investment Banking.

Library currently subscribes to over 35,000 E-journals, and over 268,000 E-books featuring subjects from arts and humanities, to science and technology and medicine.
In this workshop, we will discuss issues including points to note when locating books and articles via the Library Catalogue, techniques of retrieving full-text articles and methods of searching on different platforms.

LS047 - “Next-generation” catalogue: SuperCat and Advanced Techniques for Searching Library Catalogue (1 hour 15 mins)
Start from our new catalogue, SuperCat, this workshop will introduce participants to this one-stop searching tool. Also, the instructor will further explore some advanced search features of using the Library catalogue (OPAC). Techniques such as subject search, modifying search using various parameters, viewing search history, exporting records, etc. will be explained.
The workshop will also touch upon finding course reserve materials.
