1. Can JULAC card holders use wireless network in the Library?
JULAC card holders are not eligible to use PolyU WLAN service. However, they may use eduroam or “Universities WiFi” service to connect to the Internet with their own university logins. Please refer to card holder’s own university off-campus wireless network provision for more details.

2. Can alumni and special borrowers use the Library’s wireless LAN connection?
Non-PolyU Library users who are current PCCW or Y5ZONE subscribers may now connect to the Internet from the Library network. Non-subscribers may purchase a day pass online for temporary use.

3. Are there any scanners in the Library?
Yes. We have scanners in Photocopying Unit, Media Services (3/F) and Special Collections (4/F). Users should save scanned images in the hard disk first, then choose either to copy the files into a USB storage device or send them by e-mail.

4. Are there any PCs with application software in the Library?
PCs in Media Services (3/F) and 24-hour Study Centre (G/F) are equipped with Microsoft Office.

5. How do we know if a book is being catalogued?
(i) When a call number and subjects are assigned in the bibliographic record
(ii) When the status shows “IN PROCESS”

6. When an item is in the process of being cataloguing, how long does it take before it is available for loan?
Within 10 working days.

7. Can a user request an item that is in the stage of processing?
(i) For “BEING PROCESSED” materials – A user may make a request through the help of a duty librarian at the Information Desk.
(ii) For “IN PROCESS” or "ON DISPLAY" materials – A user can make a request online.

8. How can users view new books of previous display periods?
When users click "New Books" on the Library Homepage and select a subject, they have the options to view current "New books on Display", new books displayed "1 month ago" and "2 months ago".

9. What can a user do if an "available" item is not found on shelves"?
For Circulation books and journals, users may approach the Circulation Counter (P/F) for assistance. Staff will take appropriate action.

10. When will the reserved item be re-shelved if nobody picks it up? When will the cancellation notice be sent?
[Note: PolyU books are on hold for 8 days / HKALL books for 5 days]
(i) For PolyU books – The uncollected items will be re-shelved on the morning of the 9th day. A cancellation notice will be sent on the 10th day.
(ii) For HKALL books – The uncollected items will be returned to the owning UGC Library on the 6th day. A cancellation notice will be sent on the 7th day.

11. Can a user pick up a requested item on the last day of the pick-up period, i.e. the 8th day (for PolyU books) / 5th day (for HKALL books)?
Yes.

12. When should a recalled item be returned?
All recalled items must be returned on or before the revised due date.
[Note: The guaranteed minimum use period is 28 days. If the user has the book for over 28 days and the item gets recalled, then the user still has 11 more days to keep the book.]

13. Will an item be recalled even if it is just charged out?
Yes. However, a user can still keep the book for 28 days.

14. Can a user renew a book on or after the due date? When can a user renew his books?
(i) For books of term loans - Users can renew them within 28 days of the due date.
(ii) For books of 4-week loans – Users can renew them within 7 days of the due date.
[Note: All books loaned from the Circulation Collection can be renewed twice be it on or after the due date, as long as there is no one requesting for the same item. Overdue fines will be recorded automatically.]

15. Can all postgraduate students apply for JULAC cards?
UGC-funded, PolyU's self-funded postgraduate degree students or UGC-funded postgraduate non-degree students are eligible to apply for a JULAC borrower’s ticket. They can approach to the Circulation Counter to check their eligibility.

16. Can all undergraduate students apply for JULAC cards?
UGC-funded undergraduate degree students can apply for reader access (without borrowing privilege) to other institutions subject to a fee of $50 for each registration and renewal. Registration is valid until the end of the academic year (i.e. 31 July each year).

17.Where to buy a photocopying card?
It can be bought from the dispensers inside the photocopying rooms on 4/F and 5/F or at the Photocopying Unit on G/F with a deposit of $10.

18. If a user wants to make only a few copies and does not want to buy a photocopying card, can s/he pay the copies by cash?
No. Users are recommended to purchase a photocopying card and to add the minimum value of $1. Alternatively, users can use the Octopus-enabled copiers and printers located on all the floors.

19. Can we renew audio-visual items?
Only those audio-visual items on 7-day loan can be renewed for up to 2 times if nobody has placed request for them.

20. Can audio-visual materials be reserved?
Yes. For teaching and class preparation purpose, teaching staff can book audio-visual materials in advance for use on a specific date.

21. Are all examination papers available?
Our examination paper collection starts from 1969. However, the availability of specific papers depends on the instructor’s decision.

22. Does Special Collections keep the out-dated course schemes? If so, how long are they kept?
Only the latest versions of both active and inactive course schemes are kept at Special Collections Counter for loan. Course schemes are kept date back as far as 1973.

23. Some graduates often ask for syllabuses of years ago. Where can they get them?
Graduates need first to check with Special Collections whether the course schemes they are looking for are available. If so, a special permission will be arranged to let them in for consultation.

24. What is the deadline for returning a reserved item that is borrowed for overnight reading?
Overnight loans of reserve books can be returned to the Special Collections Counter within one hour after the Library opens, or through the bookdrop anytime before the Library opens.

25. Under what criteria will an item be relocated from CIR to SC?
Based on:
(a) lecturer recommendation
(b) outstanding requests: when there are 5 or more holds of the same item.
