PENALTIES FOR USING MOBILE PHONES AND PAGERS
INSIDE THE LIBRARY

The burgeoning problem of thoughtless use of mobile phones and pagers inside the Library causes great disturbance to Library users. The Library, after meeting with representatives of the Students Union, will launch an 'anti-mobile phones campaign':

Details of the campaign are as follows:

  1. All users will be advised to deactivate mobile phones and pagers upon entering the Library.
  2. A grace period prior to the start of the campaign proper will begin on Tuesday May 26, 1998.
  3. The campaign will begin in earnest on Monday June 1, 1998.
  4. A scale of penalties has been approved by the Student Discipline Committee. Repeated infringement of the mobile-phone ban in the Library within a period of twelve months will result in:

First offence

Second offence

Third offence

Fourth offence

Fifth offence

:

user will be served with a warning notice, offence will be recorded;

user's name will be posted at the Library entrance;

user's borrowing privileges will be suspended for one day with immediate effect;

access to the Library will be denied for one week;

access to the Library will be denied for one month.

The Library seeks the wholehearted support of every level of the University community in underwriting this campaign. The Library is now a 'zero tolerance' area for mobile phones and pagers. Before entering the Library, please switch them off. If you see anyone using a mobile phone/pager in the Library, please tell a member of the Library staff.

Thank you,
